Highly Shocking and Deeply Concerning": Dr. Anthony Raju Calls for Urgent Diplomatic Intervention in the Case of 3 Indians Sentenced to Death in Indonesia
New Delhi, [02-05-2025] – Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman of the Indian National Human Rights Protection Council (INHRC), has expressed serious concern over the sentencing of three Indian nationals to death in Indonesia. Terming the development as "highly shocking and deeply concerning," Dr. Raju urged the Government of India and the Government of Indonesia to initiate immediate diplomatic communication to safeguard the legal and human rights of the individuals involved.
"The matter demands the highest level of urgency and sensitivity, not only from a legal standpoint but also from a humanitarian and diplomatic perspective," said Dr. Raju. "It is imperative that the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Consulate in Indonesia act swiftly to provide legal assistance, consular access, and human rights protection to the individuals sentenced."
Dr. Raju welcomed the Delhi High Court's direction to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian consulate to take necessary steps, but also emphasized that more proactive efforts are required. He called upon both nations to respect international human rights standards and to ensure that the rights of the accused are fully upheld in accordance with both Indonesian law and international conventions.
The INHRC reiterates its commitment to justice, fairness, and the protection of Indian citizens abroad and stands ready to assist in any legal or diplomatic support required in this urgent matter.
