In a best reply to RTI raised by well reputed Human Rights Advocate His Excellency Dr. Anthony Raju to National Human Rights Commission, The NHRC has replied to the RTI “As per the Protection of Human Rights 1993, there is no restriction to use “HUMAN RIGHTS” word by anyone in India. However, the commission does not support the name similar to that of National Human Rights Commission.
We definitely like to request Hon. DGP to reconsider his order and allow people to work for the promotion of Human Rights, many non-governmental organisations across India are working towards safeguarding human rights. Most such organisations use the words “human rights” in their name. Similarly, if any organisation is found abusing the words ‘human rights’, let the police take action on the people concerned than have a blanket ban,” he said.
It is to be noted that the Protection of Human Rights Act was enacted in India only in 1993, and the NHRC and SHRCs were established. According to United Nations conventions, the concept of “human rights” keeps expanding to include women’s rights, child rights, labour rights, environmental rights, etc. So every individual has the freedom to raise their voice for human rights, Dr. Raju explained.
